Dynamic simulation is a time discrete representation of the processes behavior, which provides detailed insight into transient process values including e.g. retention times and thermal lags.
Through dynamic simulation varying capacity, startup, shutdown, feed and composition changes of a continuous steady state process can be studied. Furthermore, dynamic simulation can be used for operational plant troubleshooting, control loop tuning and real time optimization.
The aim of the CHEMCAD Dynamics Seminar by PrimeUnit GmbH, is to describe the steps for performing a dynamic simulation, interpreting the results and optimizing the model. On the first day of the seminar, the basics of dynamic simulation are explained. Then some concept essentials to dynamic simulation such as control valves and the ramp UnitOp are introduced through examples. Other topics include design of control systems, and dynamic simulation with heat exchangers and batch distillation.

On the second day of the Dynamics Seminar, some examples of dynamic distillation are performed, including a dynamic column with bottoms control. Next, the topic of dynamic simulation of reactors are demonstrated with Gibbs and Batch reactors. Dynamic simulation is a very powerful tool in the modeling of batch reactors, since it can help with preventing costly mistakes prior to start up. And once a model is validated against real time performance data, it can be used as a diagnostics tool to identify operating problems. The final topics of the seminar are dynamic relief, safety valve and piping networks which are necessary for operation safety.
